Is it just me who found the Saturday (15/5) Times Jumbo crossword unusually difficult?

I cannot work out the following and would be VERY grateful for any light being shed
on them.

36 down. Like Albion perhaps, quietly thrashing side four-one (10)

44down. US city area appears in acceptable light (7)

22d scheme - last letters

36d perfidious = p + anagram of (side+four=i)

44d Oakland = a(area) inside of ok + land

54a exhumed - buzz = hum, journalist = ed, (can't think why ex)
I think it's EX because item here means a couple (of people), and so when they have split up one of them would be an ex.
