Hi there, i recently moved from virgin to sky. My contract ended a couple of weeks ago and i have just received a letter and empty box from Virgin requesting i return the V box. I had no idea i had to return it, they never mentioned it when i rung up to cancel so i recycled it. They say if i don't return it they will charge me £55. Was wondering if anyone had any advise. Thank you x

speedyvic,

When I finished my contract with Virgin 6 months ago, they told me straight away that I would receive a box to return my V box paid by them and I had to send remote as well.
Forgot to add, I received the return box a few days later.

Well they never said anything to me about returning it untill i received the empty box and letter today!
Virgin were under no obligation to mention the return of their equipment when you phoned to cancel your contract. When you signed up to the service, either online or on paper, you will have been presented with their terms and conditions. These state:
"If we or you end these agreements, or you decide to disconnect from some of our services, you must return our equipment to us (or let us collect it from you if we choose to do this). You must return equipment or make it available for collection in a reasonable condition, allowing for fair wear and tear. If you fail to return or make available the equipment for collection for any reason, we are entitled to charge you for the replacement cost of the equipment".

Unless you can show that £55 is excessive as 'replacement cost' (which I doubt) you're legally obliged to pay up. You can either do so or wait to see if they'll bother to pursue (through a 'small claims' court action) to get their money. (Some companies always chase every penny that they're owed, while others simply give up. The only way to find out what Virgin's policy is will be to 'wait and see').

When I first paid and got my V box I thought I owned it as they never stated it was on loan, unless it was hidden in the small print we never seem to have the time to read.

I would ask them why they never told you about the return when you cancelled the contract and to check the tape conversation that they warn us when we telephone them. They might back off then.
get one from ebay or pay the 55 or they will send your account to an independent and will charge you for costs on top of the 55 remember each letter usually cost 15 pound

Years ago when I cancelled virgin(pre v box) even though I had been a customer since their NTL days, someone came to collect the box.
If you read the small print, they do say you are basicly renting the box from them. That is why they are so willing to say in their ads 'no repair fees ever need be paid'In so many words anyway. You dont own the box, just rent it.
Is the box they have sent recorded delivery? If not tell them youve sent it they cant prove otherwise specially with our postal system these days!!
i left vm 3 years ago due to a house move and although they had my new address they have never asked for the box back.i would take hevs advice if its not recorded delivery.
