In the 60s I visited Rome and I'm sure I can remember being shown a wolf in an underground enclosure which could be seen by looking down through a viewing window set into the surface of the piazza. I was told that it was there to commemorate the twins Romulus and Remus who were brought up by a she wolf and went on to found the city. Does anyone know if the wolf was ever there,is it still there or did I imagine it?

Going by the article linked below from The Spokesman Review, April 1968 - you may not have been imagining this...

This is a statue called the Etruscion She Wolf, with small figures of Romulas and Remus underneath her being suckled. So you did see it and not imagine it.
Thing is, this statue is in the Capitoline Museum - can;t see it being put in a pit. Plus, not sure if original post refers to a live animal?
I went to this museum a few months ago and I remember the wolf: http://en.wikipedia.o...Romulus_and_Remus.jpg

This museum has a very large underground section that has a lot of sculptures etc. as well as excavations. The wolf bronze is not down there though, it is on the street level. It is possible it has been moved since the 60's though.

Thanks to all of you, it was a live wolf not a statue. Thanks getinblurry this looks like what I remember. So I wasn't imagining it, what a relief! I would imagine that he has been moved now in these more animal friendly times.
