Every time I try to play music or a downloaded film via Windows Media Player it says

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound or video device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."

I have tried reinstalling windows media player but the problem returns. The sound and picture work OK with other players but  prefer WMP. Any help appreciated.

Far from being an expert on this, but depending on what you have downloaded, there are loads of things about these days whereby they use different codecs etc.which WMP doesnt have as standard - I have a number of files that will play on other players - there are sites where you can download the appropriate codec (plug in) but I wouldnt know which ones are needed im sorry.

Hi.  if you are running a legit ME operating system, go to www.microsoft.com  click on popular downloads, where you can upgrade to media player 10 free.

hope this helps

forgot to add, if this problem persists, it could be a corrupted driver on you sound devices.  try reinstalling drivers if media player 10 does not solve the probs.
