I am looking to buy one of those cassettes that plugs into your car and connects to your phone/i pod. Could anyone tell me, is the sound of a poor quality because its going through the tape player?

I've tried one. It was rubbish.
I've used one and it was fine, you have to be careful not to set the volume on the MP3 player too high otherwise it will distort a lot.
I have used a cassette convertor for a very long time ,I have found that all the inexpensive one were rubbish ,I then bought one from The Sony Centre with the previso that if it was not to my liking I could return it for a full refund .It was and still is superb it is playing as I type this.
get one that tunes to your radio. Much better
I've used a cheapo one (from a pound shop) without any problems. However the adapters which transmit an FM signal to your car radio are far better. Asda sell them for £8 but they're part of a range of iPod accessories currently offered at 'two for a tenner'.
