I have some work trousers which have started to fade, and money is tight at the mo. They are in otherwise good condition.

I was going to try some black dye in the washing machine with them, but if it were to go all blotchy I could be in hot water! I wondered if anyone has any experience of using a washing machine dye and the results before I try.

Also, will it stain subsequent washes?

Thankyou in advance.

If it is only one pair of trousers I would just use a bowl. You need the dye to match the fabric. I once dyed something with rayon in the fibre and it ran out again. Black on black should be no problem, I have had weird colours on my bedding and curtains. Salt is the key when dying so put the right amount in. It's two pairs of trousers in overall type material, so I will try the washing machine.

Thanks very much for your advice.
Dylon dyes are very good when its dark colours, think you can get cold wash dyes for the washing machine think you add salt as i remember
Hi oldhamfan, yes I've done it and it works. The hints re salt are important. Be sure to run an empty wash after you've finished, to clear out any sneaky bits of dye which might be lurking in corners, before you put a good-clothes wash in afterwards.
I dye my black trousers regularly and have never had a problem. Just make sure you wipe the machine out before you use it again, just in case.
