I have answers for 8 and 43 across (because someone put the answers on here - thank you!!), but don't know WHY they are the answers!

Can anyone help?

8 across "She's great, but diminutive" is apparently MORAG, but I can't figure out why.

43 across "Lettered collar for dignitaries" is ESSES, but I can't find this word anywhere.

Explanations would be very welcome!

thank you

8a from Chambers: Morag (Gaelic) a diminutive of Mor, great.
Morag is a diminutive form of Mor which means great.
A collar of esses is confirmed in Chambers.
43a it's in Chambers under ess - collar of esses - a chain of links (also written SS) in the form of the letter S worn by various dignitaries.
