I cannot unerstand how someone can voluntarily let a doctor perform surgery on him/her if it is not absolutely necessary. I mean all surgeries have risks, and doctors are humans who make mistakes. I don't trust anybody enough to let them cut me open unless it is absolutely necessary. How can someone justify the risks of having a boob job or a facelift? I know everyone is different, but I am interested in hearing some other people's opinions on this. Thanks in advance.

If you're unhappy with your appearence and you have the money to do it, I personally don't see a problem with it. They are made fully aware of the risks prior to surgery, but if they still want to proceed who are we to argue otherwise?

good luck to 'em :-)
I agree 100% newtron. most of the surgery you refer to is purely for vanity. There are cases where cosmetic surgery is used to correct deformaties but mostly it's unnecessary. Like most people I can think of improvements I'd like to make but no Bl00dy way would I go under the knife unless it's absolutely necessary. My particular bug bear is boob jobs, artificial ones look bloody awful. There was a test going round a couple of years back, real or fake, I got 100%. Boob jobs are like wigs, they're only any good if you can't tell they're fake. Give me real ones any day! I don't mind if they're not perfect girls they just have to feel right!
i agree with what B00 said above. I think it must be really awful to be so unhappy with the way you look that you have to get cosmetic surgery, but i think that is why some people have it done. Some of the programs about it on the TV are about people who have been bullied most of their lives because of the way they look and go through the surgery to make themselves feel better.
Others may have been in accidents and been permantly scarred so have something done.
If someone goes through it just because they want bigger breasts i dont agree with that (say Jordan or Leah), i think that is wrong.

i think that if you seriously want it done and have thought it through then its okay.

I can uderstand cometic surgery to correct deformaties or for someone who has been permanently scarred from an accident. I have no problems there.
Can see your point newtron, however I don't see a problem with cosmectic surgery for vanity reasons alone. Afterall most women wear make-up purely for vanity, What's the difference?- apart from the pain and the cost!
no-one is coming near me with a needle or a knife unless its for medical reasons, not a chance. my mate had a boob job but she had her own reasons and fair enough but people like alicia duvall and jackie stallone and that wilderbeast woman WHY WHY WHY

Newtron how do you feel about people who have been bullied all their life and get it done to stop that, or because they feel so ugly and horrible all their lives?
just wanted to know what your views were on that.

do you ever watch Nip/Tuck by the way? (i love that show!)
Medical reasons like deformity through birth or accident; and boob reduction because of back/shoulder problems - I agree with. But surgery purely for cosmetic reasons seems just to cater to vanity (not just women either!) and an excuse to line the surgeon's pockets. As for making someone feel better because they were bullied, I think they need psychological help first to come to terms with their mental image before resorting to the knife. Trouble is, people seem to lose their individuality and they all start to look the same. As a woman I too like to wear make-up and nice clothes but that's to enhance what I have - not change it. Still, at the end of the day it's down to personal choice after all.

I've never been one of the "beautiful people", and I was bullied quite a bit in school. I just dealt with it and put most of my energy into academics which was something that I was good at. I am a male, and I can except that there is probably much more pressure to look good for females. I just think life is about accepting your shortcomings and figuring out what you are good at. So, no I don't uderstand the justification for unnecessary surgery for ugly people who have been bullied all their life. They should be able to see that there is more to life than being accepted by the "in crowd". That's my opinion. And No, I don't watch Nip/Tuck. That stuff freaks me out!

BOO, the difference between wearing makeup and cosmetic surgery is the risk. Also, I generally think most women wear too much makeup. I like the natural look.
Hi all, good post newtron. I had a nose job about 20 years ago now and it was the best thing I ever did! I think cosmetic surgery for vanity, very much depends on how much you let your looks impact on your life. This of course is not helped by the images we are bombarded with on a daily basis, of the 'beautiful people'. I think just getting on with your own life and dealing with your looks is easier said than done, especially if you are a target for some sad people who have to put you down just to make themselves feel better.
Some people are truly not bothered by how good or how bad they look, others go to great lengths to look as good as they can. For me, after my marriage broke up, I started to go out clubbing again and then got some cruel remarks about my big nose. My confidence was low anyway but once it got to the point where I did not want people to see me in profile and where after one taunt in a pub, I spent the next 3 hours crying in the toilet, I decided that I had to do something about it! Also at this point, my very down to earth friend who had been advising me against going for surgery, said to me 'Sue for gods sake, get it done!' She could see the effect it was having on my life.
After going via my doctor, I booked myself in, and the result was fantastic! It changed my whole outlook and my confidence was boosted about 80%!
I feel that if someone wants surgery done, as long as they know the risks and are realistic about the result then they should go for it!
Cheers Sue

Thanks sue11. I was hoping to hear from people who have had cosmetic surgery. It seems to have worked for you. Fair enough. As I said in the question, everyone's different. And obviously, you're not the only one. A lot of people are doing it these days. I just question the direction we are going these days with our appearance being so important. Personally, I think we should some how make being educated and intelligent "cool", but that's not happening. Oh well. Thanks again.
Hi newtron, I agree it is a shame that appearances are judged so important. but I feel that to get rid of vanity, we would all have to completely change our lifestyles, so I think it will be impossible!!
Cheers Sue
Hi newtron, Yes, your right.....doctor's/surgeon are humans also who can make mistakes and not always perfect... but..professionals and certified doctors are less possibility to have this..So, I can say that better to seek the best doctor first to be appointed. I can recommend you with this professional surgeion through this link... http://www.jaycalvertmd.com Media URL: http://www.jaycalvertmd.com
