Whenever I go to McD's, KFC etc and I just want a burger they always look at me to say "And" and then they say "Big Mac Meal?"
No I don't want a friggin meal, if I had I would've asked for it. It's like they don't understand the concept "on it's own"

Yes working with "the public" is always a challenge and it hurts when your efforts are belittled by comedians seeking an easy target. Many years ago I worked on a main Post Office counter. We had to know around 150 different kinds of transaction (e.g., issuing passports, car tax, German savings banks etc etc) and deal civily with everyone from masses of foreign students to eccentric old ladies via the inevitable abusive drunks, at the same time keeping the money straight or else - trouble. Daily one would go that extra mile and be able to help someone who appreciated it, which was rewarding. All kinds of problems came our way. Then at home, worn out but feeling you've done a good job you hear some lazy comedian taking the p out of you because he knows it will be an easy laugh. I remember it was demoralising. Now of course the poor blighters doing that job also have to "sell up" PO products and are obliged to move customers along as if on a conveyor belt all under the eyes of the "Mystery shopper" who reports you if you don't smile enough. The McD employee at my local branch who was dealing politely with a bunch of restless and abusive youths while there was a delay (not of his making) had my utmost sympathy...especially when one of them stole the entire cake (muffin?) display and ran off laughing. I do wish we could be allowed chips though...
I agree and ANDY HUGHES. Staff are trained to rigorous standards and are requested to ask certain questions. They need to clarify exactly what you want. I am a Mystery Shopper for a certain burger chain and have to take note of the entire act of how the whole system works, including how staff treat you, how long it is to be served etc. etc. etc. and if the staff have asked the right questions. Its all to do with standards and good customer service at the end of the day.
I would also like to add that I too work with the public and I can sympathise with anyone that does and understand how difficult it can be. Oh the whole, most customers are pretty pleasant but then you can get some real a**eholes.

I work at a supermarket evenings and weekends simply because I chose not to go back to my fulltime job as a P.A. as it did not pay enough to warrant covering childcare and me missing out on my daughter's childhood, i.e. first steps, first words etc.

I choose to work where I am because I get to be with my daughter all day and my husband looks after her when I go to work and earn some pennies. I am actually financially more sound working this way. So I get the best of both worlds.

It annoys me greatly that people find it satisfying to belittle people such as supermarket/fast food staff as they actually know nothing about the people who work there - I almost used to do the Marketing Director's job for him at one time! Yet folks assume that I am an idiot because I sit on a checkout.

We also have standards to work to and things we are supposed to say to a customer at the checkout. As I said previously, its all part of standards and customer satisfaction.
