Get down to the garden centre and start reading seed packets, you're on the verge of a potential passion. You could possibly do some catch crop things like radishes or baby turnips (Thompson and Morgan Tokyo Cross?). You're not going to be self sufficient, but give it a try. If you stick with it, do runner beans (next year), they crop like mad. I still have beans in my freezer from last year.

Get slug pellets. Slugs can take a row of seedlings out overnight.

thankyou-I will nip over to B&Q later and have a good look. Its something ive been wanting to do for a while now.
My Nan always had a small patch of garden for me to plant things like radishes. It was fun to be able to eat something I'd personally grown. And I'd recommend it to anyone especially with children.
plug plants can be better if you're just starting out, go to www.mr-fothergills.co.uk for a look at their seeds and plugs.
