The shower scene in Psycho has very memorable music. It sounds like a knife being thrusted

and what about in Juarassic Park when you can hear the dinosaur coming towards you. everything is silent apart from the boom of the footprint and the shaking of the water in the glass.
What about the scene towards the end of a Fistful of Dollars, to build up the tension, when the man with no name sets off dynamite, causing a dust storm, the music plays, the bad guys glance at each other wondering whats happening. the dust slowly settles and there's Clint, just standing there cigar in his mouth waiting
Hi again,
Try this for a tension builder. 'The Ecstasy of Gold' from 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly'

and you can see the composer conducting it himself here

Personally, I found watching the orchestra's live performance drives home what a terrific piece of music this is :-)

In that case, you should watch the film now you know what you are looking for.
A thought on the 'silence' bit.
By half way through the film you were sort of used to the music meaning the shark was about. When Hooper gets in the water to inspect the half submerged rowing boat, you are sort of thinking " here comes the music and the shark", but its just silence...then the head rolls out! Made me jump about a mile!! (I was only 14 at the time!!!!)
I have not seen JAWS in ages. But, remember that the music or silence is to build tension and release tension. If you are holding your breath wondering when the shark is going to return, this is tension. When the shark does return, this is a release of tension. The build and release both frighten the audience. When the music is playing, tension builds and the audience is frightened, wondering what will happen, who will die, will the shark be stopped. If I remember correctly, the music seems to get faster the farther along in the film we go. Watch the film for answers, using these thoughts. Music playing does not signify the shark. It signifies that we know the shark is there. Silence makes us wonder where the shark is right now.
