I was having a discussion with a friend about how you don’t see cigarette machines in pubs anymore. We were then trying to think of the last time we saw one. Is there a law against them now? Has anyone seen one in a pub lately?

There is no law against them, the place I worked for nearly 5 years still has theres.
There's a cigarette machine in most of the pubs round here.
I saw one up in Central London a few weeks ago...
The places have probably removed them because there is a shop near by that sells cigarettes. Now people have to go outside I suppose they don't mind walking a few feet. Not only that alot of people have cut down on smoking whilst at pubs and restuarants, so the requirement to buy cigs whilst in the establishment are no longer needed.
a lot of pubs still have them, though maybe not for long.

The pubs round where we live all still have them too.

Mind you, they probably dont do much sales wise as even the local ice cream van sells ciggies round our way!
my locals have them. maybe alot of pubs have got rid because they feel they dont need them after the smoking ban
Then theres the inflated costs, the list just goes on and on :)
The pub owner might be against smokers, the pub owner might be hoping this cuts down on people littering with cigarette butts, yada yada :)
plus they attract theft, the pub where my son works was burgled last wednesday night, the cigarette machine was opened and emptied, the burglar left size 6 footprints in the snow outside which makes the police think it was kids/teenagers (or a woman lol) the burglar actually went into all the bedrooms on the top floor where the landlord and his family were sleeping .
dizmouk shops make no difference, ours shut at 10pm and people are more likely to run out later on in the night.

Also can I ask lukey why is this in food and drink?
yes our pub has one
In the W H Smith Concession at Bristol Airport, I'm sure I saw Marlborough Lights prices up at over £7 per pack. It was early in the morning, but I could have sworn they were £7 something for 20.

Thanks for the answers, very interesting. 4getmenot: it is in food and drink becasue it has to do with pubs, I eat and drink at a pub.
Ah ok.
most pubs i'v been in have cigarette machines, i'd say the company(s) that own the machines withdrew them from some of the pubs for sales reasons
They will all be gone in 2011. Law has been past.
