Yes you can use CD-RWs to record music onto but you have to finalise them in order for standard music CD players to read them. Secondly, the Universal Disk Format (UDF) file system specification, as defined by the Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA), is the widely-accepted standard to which DVD devices read/write data.
