The switchover for my area is not until 2012 but is there a website (or any other way) to know if digital signals are currently available here or, if not, when they will start to be broadcast?

I have been looking at digitaluk.co.uk but that just appears to say that the switchover is not for over 2 years, nothing about any intermediate period prior to the switchover when digital broadcasts wil have started but the analogue signal will still be available.

The bottom line is:- how long before the switchover does the digital signal start to be broadcast?

have a look here mate
http://www.freeview.co.uk/
ours is supposed to be switched over in 2012 too ( Northern Ireland) check your local postcodes up to a few streets away
i`ve been getting digital tv for 2 years (with a booster) even though freeview say otherwise. only in september they said we could get a limited service ( the usual 5) but the only ones we cant get is sky3 and dave but we can get dave ja vu. try and borrow a freeview box and test it out
Our area, North Yorkshire, and where I lived previously, West Yorkshire are not due to switch over until 2011 ( I think) but I have been able to get all the digital channels for about 5 years, in fact I am on my third digibox.

Thanks for the replies, especially the link to freeview. That says that I can't currently receive any but I wonder if it always says that until the switchover has actually happened?

Before moving within the local area last year, I was able to pick up a few freeview channels using a weak tv signal from a transmitter somewhere, but now, despite living not far from there, I can't seem to receive any. I bought an indoor digital tv antenna yesterday to see if anything is available but unfortunately there's nothing there. Oh well, just have to wait and see, I guess.

To pick up digital signals you need a "high gain" roof aerial.

An indoor aerial is not likely to be any good (unless you live next door to the transmitter)
freeview has been available to all for years unless you live in a very remote area.
the switch-over doest mean analogue off digital on.
