i'm moving house in less than a month for the first time ever, and i want to get our mail redirected to our new address. is it worth paying for 12 months do you think, or will 6 months about do it?

6 months would be OK so long as you ensure that those who need to know you have moved are told. Beyond that, it is only junk that should come.

everyone keeps telling me there's always someone you forget to tell, so i reckon 6 months would do too. i an't actually think of anyone who wouldn't write to me in less than a 6 month period.
6 months will probably do it if you discipline yourself to deal with redirected mail when it comes through. what i mean is, when you get a piece of mail with the redirected label on it, phone the sender yourself and change your details, cos mailing lists are nothing if not persistent and the post office forwarding your mail will not change any details on any mailing lists.
and although you may not care about receiving all that junk mail that continues to be sent to your old address, the new receivers will have your full name and any other details contained within. that said, im probly a little paranoid.
When I moved into my house, the previous owner redirected her mail for 6 months but left me with a number of sticky labels with her name and address on them, in case any came through after the redirect ran out.

I thought this was a good idea as it made it as easy as possible for me to get her mail to her
We had ours for 3 years and we still got a bit of stuff at the end of that.

It depends if you get a lot of annule stuff that gets forgotten...
We did 24 months and were still getting stuff at the end of the period. Many issues were Christmas cards and organisations you're members of who don't take any notice of your first (or even second) notifications.
I think a year is probably the best minimum date, especially if you have annual subscriptions to people like the AA, National Trust, magazine subscriptions which come by post, etc.
I think the idea of giving the new owner of your property some sticky labels for the forwarding of mail after your redirection service ends is a very good idea. There's always a risk of identity theft from misdirected mail so anything you can do to prevent this is worthwhile.
We did a year as some things only come that often eg pension, mortgage, insurance documents. We were so busy we didn't get it all changed in that time and still ended up extending it. 6 months isn't really long enough in my opinion.
