How much or whether you should ?
I haven't been to a hairdressers for a while now,but when I did I would tip if I was happy with the cut and the service.I would not tip if unhappy with either.
I do, though I'm never quite sure why to be honest.

I don't tip the check out girl at Asda, no matter how pleased I am that she's zapped my shopping through quickly!
Speaking of check out people (not to be sexist) I hate when they sit there while you are packing everything, trying to open bags and move quickly to let the next person go ahead
Sorry for going off topic - i always tip at the hairdressers also but no set percentage
I usually give my hairdresser a couple of quid tip for a wash, trim, blow dry & straighten.
It's not as cruel as cow tipping, but I still wouldn't do it :)

My hairdresser works from home AnnieBody, so there's no one else to tip!

She is also a mobile hairdresser & could come to me, but I prefer to go to her, as she has had one of her garages converted into a salon & it's sooo peaceful with no other women yakking away in the background!
Tipping was done because the junior who washed your hair and did other such jobs was on a very very low wage, reliant on tips.
Now he or she will be on minimum wage with working tax credit if qualifying for it. No need to tip anyone these days.
Hairdressing is a personal service.....men get ear & brow trims; ladies have odd long beard hairs plucked, eye-brows colored etc. These are seen by the stylist because of the close scrutiny of a clients face and not usually priced for.

If you are happy with the finish and you 'depend' on your stylist for your image then show your appreciation by tipping. Its the salon owner who gets the 'booked' price not the employee!
I have been going to the same lady for about six months now. Her price for my Number One is only £5.00, and she does my eyebrows as well, so i can afford to go weekly.

I don't tip, but I will buy her a nice present at Christmas.
I'm really stupid. Even if a hairdresser does a bad job, I tip them. It's almost embarrassing the way they hang around the till when you're paying, as if to say, where's my tip then. Isn't it weird the way we tip certain people, but not others. They're all being paid after all. But we tip dustmen and the postie at Christmas, so why not the supermarket check out person. The whole tipping thing is crazy. Employers should pay people a decent wage in the first place. Mind you, it would be nice to be able to afford the occasional hair 'doo' these days, but finding the money for rent, food and power bills is difficult enough at the moment.
ive found this very interesting as I am a hairdresser!! Personally, I would NEVER expect a tip off anyone, but when clients do tip, to me, it is a confidence boost as you feel you have done something right and made them happy. If someone doesnt tip, my paranoia tells me they weren\'t happy with their hair. And I only ever hang around at the till, as we are trained to open and close the visit, by greeting at the door and leaving at the door!
Also, hairdressers, or the majoirty are NOT on a good wage, but thats no need for you to tip i just wanted to point that out! I am a senior hairdresser and wages are poor in a busy city salon.
To me who I tip throughout the year is a personal thing, I will tiip my beautician when she does a lovely job, my waiter/ress, when Im pleased with my service and anyone else who i feel has gone out of their way to be nice to me......
also, buzylizzy, if you want your hair doing on a cheaper basis, why not try a salons training night? the apprentices are always supervised, i've never seen anything go wrong! and ist usually half the price. Just be prepared for it to take longer that's all
