Saw new one last night and Jeff Goldblum is very very good - his quirky character matches that of Vincent D'Onofrio. What was the reason in the show for the Chris Noth character to leave ?

With Bobby Goran (Vincent D'Onofrio) you saw him use his skills to analyse the suspects and thereby solve the crime.
Chris Noth was basically a Detective and the dynamic of the show changed. The shows with Chris Noth weren't as popular for that reason..............
