Sat Nav SD card

I've lost the SD card off my sat nav. I was just wondering how I get a new one?! Are the maps stored on the SD card?? So will I have to buy a new SD card and then buy maps to put on it? Or are the maps stored on the actual Sat Nav??!!
Where's the cheapest place to get tomtom maps from?
