Daughter moved away to university. She wants a TV in her ground floor room but there is no aerial. However, at the back of the house there is a redundant dish aerial fitted on the outside wall. A co-ax enters the room but is not in use. Can she run a longish extension cable from this to her TV and what sort of box would she need that wouldn't require a subscription. btw, we are buying her a brand new hd ready set with built in freeview. The alternatives are to get an ordinary aerial fitted at our expense or to use a set-top indoor aerial. Have these improved in recent years? I seem to remember that they were pretty well useless.

get a TV with freesat not freeview (or get one with both)

it's freesat that will let you use the dish for no subscription.

presumably she's either in halls or sharing accomodation

either way - the crims will be touring the campus with shopping trolleys - it's really not a good idea to buy anything that's worth stealing - and a hd ready tv is very much worth stealing - have you thought that every end of term if she comes home - you'll have to shift all her stuff home and then back when the new term begins.

and hd ready tellys weigh a ton
and when the rest of them find out she'd got a snazzy telly - she's never going to get rid of them

there is a reason that there is no aerial in the room(s)
she's going to be swamped with work if she intends to graduate - and uni life should be enjoyed - not from her room

presumably she'll have a laptop - a freesat dongle (or terrestrial digital) will be far cheaper and far less likely to be stolen

buy her the telly when she graduates
Don't forget that if she views real time TV using any of the above she will need a licence.
