Should I get a cat?

I have recently divorced from my husband and now live alone.
I want to get a pet for company in the evenings but I work throughout the day so any pet I get would be on its own for about 10 hours and my friend suggested getting a cat because they sleep for most of the day(?) and wouldnt get lonely.
I dont really know much about cats, I've always had dogs, so I am not sure if this is true.
If I was to get a cat I would most likely get an older one from a rehoming centre.
Can anyone offer any advice on this? Is it cruel for a cat to be by itself for 10 hours a day or would it most likely be asleep as my friend suggests? Or should I get two cats so they will keep each other company in the day???
I dont want to get any pet if it will be unhappy, I would rather be lonely in the evenings, so any advice would be greatly received.

Yep, Rocky, the cross Norwich Terrier/Sh!tzu, although the vet even said there`s no Sh!tzu in him, he looks just like a cross Fox/Rat lol

He`s a lovely dog, much better than a cat!!! lol

Good on you for caring for the animals though, must dash now, next doors cat is in the garden and Rocky needs to say hello to it!

Elvis is joking Ava!

I like most animals, which is a good job since we have so many!
Cats are just as good as dogs, but more independent, so I think one'd be best for spikesgirel to have.
Aaah spkesgirl - how nice of you to think about rescue cats.
I would definately get two - you could try looking for two that are related and need to be kept together then they will get a nice new loving home and will have each other to keep company while you are at work and then will make a fuss of you when you get home.
Good luck in your search! And if you ever need more cat advice - you wont find a better place than here!

Thanks for all the advice everyone! I think that settles it. I'm going to go to my local cats protection or RSPCA rehoming centre and get an older cat. Maybe one no one else wants because its old or something, then we can be rejects together LOL!

Thanks again!
using Wolf's description, my cat is actually a dog! I come down in the morning and he still can't be arsed to move :o)

good luck, spikesgirl, let us know how you get on x
Lol, totally agree with you Wolf but ... I got me a cat [after splitting up with an ex so maybe there's a theme here] and whilst he loved company, I could leave him at home all day and he was fine...also, I'd never had a cat before but he was so easy to live with, independent, cute, loving but definately his own cat ;p

if you decide to share your home with a cat, enjoy, they're fab, xxx
