I've always known it as a 'Wolly' - as do both Chambers & Collins...

Every fish and chip shop that I have been in in my life ( which is now quite a long one ) has a sign which says "Wallies " in other words a pickled gherkin.From the London slang Wally Perkins (gherkins).Hit Google and you will get far more hits hits for Wally than Wolly .
