How simple should this be! But something has gone wildly wrong and I can't see what!
Got a 24 page Word document. It was 23 pages, I needed extra page so copied a page in, got the whole 24 pages to look like I wanted then added the page numbers via the insert page number bit. Everything fine upto page 17, this being where i inserted the new page. I now have 2 page 17's before the rest of the numbers carry on. Does same with H & F
I'm sure this new page is the culprit but as experienced as I am (!) I cannot see how to get pages 1-24 added correctly! Any help much appreciated.

I hate Microsoft Word, precisely because it's always doing things like that!

While I'm sure that there must be a 'proper' solution, my experience of such matters is that it's usually simpler to start again. i.e. create a new blank 24 page document (with page numbering) and then copy and paste the text from the original document.

That (extremely basic) method might take a few minutes of your time (especially if you've also got headers and footers to copy across) but it will probably still be a lot quicker than hours of mucking about seeking a 'proper' solution.

Thank you, I think you are right, it certainly won't take me as long to do it again as it has trying to figure out the 'what and why' with this current document! Thanks for the tip.
your problem is copy and paste - paste takes all formatting with it - which can mess things up

documents are normally just written - so pages are added automatically - and that's where you are "fighting the system"

create your document use ctrl+enter to insert a native page and then paste into it .... repeat 24 times

(if you want to save re-formatting time - use paste special to insert plain text ... and then use your own layout)

Thanks for that. I solved it yesterday and a big lesson learnt! By coying and pasting to create a new page I created a section break and by deleting the section break the page numbers sorted themselves out. Section breaks were new to me - I know all about them now though! Thanks both for your replies.
when fiddling with pages turn on the show formatting option (the back to front P - )
makes it difficult to read - but easy to see formatting
