There are a few of us considering visiting a Caribbean Island next year to celebrate our 30th birthdays. Which island would people recommend considering the fact that we are a group of friends so it doesn't need to be romantic, we like to eat and drink out a lot and there has to be stuff other than lying on the beach/by the pool to do.

Most caribbean islands tend to be quite expensive if you are not on an all-inclusive basis. However, Cuba can be inexpensive and there's lots to see and do, great beaches, and a lovely calypso/spanish vibe.
Antigua, St kits, Barbados, St Lucia, they are close to each other & well worth the visit.

Thanks for this info - but is there enough to do in these places (Antigua, Barbados etc ) for a 2 week holiday?

We where only there for a day in each place due to us being on a cruise, If you go onto Travel dog you will find in depth info you need. the people in each town where great to get on with, the taxi driver was telling us about many men seen with one arm, the reason for this they go out to the forest to find food or whatever the get bitten by a snake they have 2 choices, cut off their arm or die as it would take to long to go to the hospital ( This is true by the way) Enjoy your trip, we did. on a point if you decide on a tour, barter & barter over the price, but do this at day time, one bit of advise if I can, do not flaunt your GOLD, some characters out there have nothing to loose.
There are load of excursions and day trips in places like St. Lucia. I was there in Feb '97, and one day I took a trip to Union Island in the Grenadines, set sail on the ship that was used in the Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy, and sailed arounds the Tobago Keys. Another day we drove round the Island and thru the rainforest, past the Pitons and down to Soufrierre. You could also take a trip to Marigot Bay (where Dr. Doolittle was filmed). They do sunset cruises with 3-course meal included. Have a walk around Castries (the Island's Capital). Yep, there's loads to keep you occupied.
I would go to Cancun, mexico as the night life downtown and the whole atmosphere is geared to real lively activities, I've been to Antigua, Cuba and cancun and the latter was definately the place for clubs and night life and shopping!!
Oh and it is open again now cos alady from work just got back, the resorts are quiet but they will busy up quickly
Dot - I went to Cancun in 2001 and I absolutely hated it !!

Twas full of drug dealers and American Students who just wanted to get wasted. I would rank it among my 3 worst holidays ever.
The 2009 hurricane season has just started, and runs until October/November.
No Mercy I went in 2004 and loved it!!! We stayed at the Riu Caribe and there were alot of americans but it was excellent!
I've got nowt against the Americans, Dot, but the Students didn't no when to go to bed. LOL
well we were in a massive hotel and so we never really had a problem, even in the bar it was ok, it was the size of a footie pitch anyway!!!
Dot - did you ever get offered Cocaine while you were out there. We did, several times.
Why don't you just go on a caribbean cruise? that way you would visit lots of the islands - they are all different - it is a safe environment, you have loads of food and entertainment included and a new place to visit most days?
