i don't know if this has been asked before, but just in case not i will venture it. When you were learning to drive, what one tip or hint that you were given, do you consider a really good one. mine is 'don't watch the car in front of you, watch the car in front of that one. (this should then give you the same reaction time as the car in front of you) this has stuck with me ever since and is a tip i pass on to others now, and with the high 'eye' level brake lights it is now much easier to do.

Sigma, If you think about what you have said! you are travelling to close to the HGV, a lot of times when I was on the HGVs I would Indicate to the left to let the people know behind me that the road ahead was clear for you to pass, but seeing the so-called glory boys of today that is something you do not get nowadays.
1.Good drivers are behind you - bad drivers are in front, beware!

2.Keep as much distance possible from vehicle in front.

sigma and twr - i agree - hgv, buses etc always have my respect they, are much bigger than me and i always give PLENTY of room, let's face it i would rather be late for my 'appointment' with whoever than early with the mortician. safe driving - phizzy.

hi tamborine - i can agree with you but sometimes you know the bad driver is behind you, 'light flasher' and 'tail gater' << this guy really does annoy, i slow and slow to let him pass, then usually catch up at next lights.

you're "DEAD" right there sigma - i'm sure that some drivers, if say, they were in a circle af cars just going round and round they would have to keep passing the car in front, i would rathe be 'late' than "late" (ahem - joke)
A good tip for motorway and fast road driving but can be applied anywhere is :

Put your eyes on 'main beam' every few seconds to see what is happening way up ahead. You will find that you will be reacting to situations much earlier than most drivers ahead.

An advanced improvement to the above is to scan left and right as you return from 'main beam' to 'dipped.' That way you also take in side roads, driveways, pedestrians etc.
