Smelly cat

Since last night I have noticed that Tigger has got really smelly breath. Its never smelt like this before. She seems fine in herself and is still quite chirpy but I am worried about this smell. I've checked her canine teeth and they don't seem to have any visible plaque on them but she won't let me look in her mouth to see if anything is stuck in there.

As I said she seems fine at the moment so I'm going to take her to the vets on Monday. Has anyone else had any experience with exceptionally smelly breath? What was the cause?

my cat was the same and i couldn't see anything. it turned out to be her teeth and she is fine now she is 18 years old with no teeth but is happy and healthy. hope this helps

Tigger is 9 and I took her and Blue to the vets last month for their boosters. teh vet checked them over and said they were both healthy. Its weird as I could only smell it from last night. She normally wakes me up every morning with a head butt, however last night when she went to head butt me while I was lying on the couch I could smell it and she hadn't even opened her mouth.

My last cat was ancient when I adopted him and he had a smelly breath. The vet scaled his teeth and all was well.

However the next year the smell started again and the vet checked his teeth and said that they were fine. His gums, however, were slightly inflamed and the vet said that cats can get chlamydia and herpes infections in their gums. I knew that Koala bears got it but just assumed that it was a STD.

Tiggy is still a relative youngster but it is worth bearing in mind. Could be a tummy problem too.

I hate going to the vet - it is about 100 yards up the road and I walk, but cats seem to get really heavy when you put them in their carriers. I am looking for one with wheels - or a pushchair. ;-)

Hi Wolf,

I'm hoping it is just tartar/plaque and can be sorted out quickly. I'm also wondering if she's got something stuck in her throat but she seems to be eating ok.

Didn't realise cats could get chlamydia! Lol

My vet is a couple of miles away so I'm going to have to get her into her box (hopefully bloodbath free) and drive her there. Its parking thats the problem.
