NTL box in the lounge, computer in bedroom on floor above. NTL came out with the cable modem but couldn't hardwire to the bedroom and advised me to get wireless router instead.

Do I  need to connect a notebook or another computer to the LAN port on the router (ie with wires) to configure it initially. I've heard you can't do that using wireless.

Normally you just open your internet browser and type the IP address of your router. They normally come preconfigured to connect wirelessly to a PC. I have found that wirless routers from D-Link are fairly straightforward to just plug and go. The only configurtion needed is to set security and firewall functions
no you should be able to assuming the wireless is working. give it a try :)

Thanks for your answers.

Would I be right in thinking I should connect the adapter up first, and then the router?

Also is there any difference in performance between a usb & a pci adapter.

thanks
I have an NTL box downstairs, and wanted to use my laptop upstairs.I bought a wireless router, but did not need the adaptor because my laptop has built in wireless capabilities, and with the help of a few Abers,I am now wireless.Once I knew what to do,it was easy, and I set up a second old laptop (which needed an adaptor) in about 10 minutes.I loaded the drivers from the disc, plugged in the adaptor, set the WEP security settings, and I now have a secure wireless network.
