A dinner party is a comfortable venue for guests to engage one another in a discussion of ideas. Imagine a dinner party where you could invite any four people, living or dead. Whom would you select and why? What issues or themes would the guests discuss? Answer these questions and develop a portion of the conversation in an essay of no more than 800 words.

This question was part of an application for a college scholarship, and was completed by my son, a high school senior in the States. The deadline has passed and he will not benefit from your responses. When I cut and pasted the question, I had intended to delete the "800 words" requirement but was interrupted mid-stream, and then (as you can see) failed to do so. I got a good laugh out of the first answer.

My son's choices, BTW, were Osama Bin Laden, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Mohandas Gandhi, and Christopher Hitchens. Hmmm.
Very good, but quite frankly, if those people were to be at a dinner party of mine, I'd say that the conversation'd be somewhat serious, and could get bogged down with politics.

I told my son the same thing; I thought he should have chosen Bill Maher instead of Christopher Hitchens. Both have strong opposition to organized religion, so could represent that point of view, but at least then there would surely be moments of humor!

All meals cooked by electric not gas
That's true Jean. In all seriousness, dinner parties usually generate good conversation, but I also think the purpose of them is to have an evening of fun and relaxation. Perhaps the theme shouldnt've been a dinner party as such - but a "relaxing evening of wine and debate!"
Then again, where religion and politics raise their heads, the subjects can cause more bad feeling than pleasant discussion!
Sorry Icey but one couldn`t help but read that in a snobish tone
