Bristol City.
News to me paraffin, where did you get that info from? We were in 4th division then after coming down from 1st division (Premier) in successive seasons - 1st club to do so.

Steve - Luton were in division 1 in 1983.
mark:

I stand corrected, but was that not the time of the so-called "Ashton Gate Eight" saga when City put the whole team up for sale?

I appreciate they were by then in the 4th Div but I didn't know whether or not "green dragon" had boobed with the division?

I'm probably wrong and apologise to both if I am.
Paraffin - Yes, basically 8 of our players tore up their contracts - saving the club as a result. A huge sacrifice on their behalf and something which would probably not happen these days.

That was January 1982, our first game after this was at home against Fulham, our manager then... Roy Hodgson!

We played the youngsters for the rest of the season and as expected were relegated, again - resulting in division 4 football the next season.

Going back to the original question I have a feeling it could of been Charlton Athletic - although a lot of clubs were in financial difficulties then.
