External Fish Tank Filters

I have recently bought a 36"x15"x20"  (177ltr) tank which I intend to keep freshwater tropical fish in.  I was wondering if anyone can recomend a good external filter as I dont seem to be able to find many independant reviews on them. I used to have a tank yrs ago and used an undergravel filter but these seem to be out of date now.  I have been looking at Fluval 304 but have read on the Practical Fish Keeping web page that they had a few problems with their unit under review which has put me off a bit.  I have been to my local aquatics centres but you never know if they are just telling you they are good because they stock them or are the most expensive.  I have heard Eheim filters are good but have also read the replacement media is expensive.  I dont know if you have to stick to a particular manufacturers media but obviously this is a consideration. I also want a filter that is quiet running as I've had enough trouble convincing my wife to let me have a tank in the house. Any feedback would be greatly received.

Ehiem filters are very good. You can use any filter media in these. I used to use different makes and never had a problem. They are very quiet and last for years.

Many thanks Icemaiden.
Hi Jay

Either Ehiem or Fluvals are good filters

I would check this site for any Tropical Fish queries you have, i used to be on the Tropical side quite a bit but have moved over to marine fish keeping
