my photoshop will not save in jpg

Hi

I have photoshop cs4 and it has been workign fine, now suddenly today it will no longer save in jpeg format. when you go to save as and select from the drop downs there are half the options missing..

cannot see jpg.. gif and eps etc etc

an ideas what might have happened? i have restarted my machine as well in make sure it was a fresh start and still will not allow me to see any of those formats in the drop down.

Is it because there are layers not flattened or something similar, 16 bit colour mode selected?
I've just converted a pic to 16 bit and it won't save as a jpeg, may be that.

Or it is in Photoshop format. Does it end .psd ?

your right it was set to 16 bit as soon as changed to 8 bit it saved. thanks
