dog passport

enquired today at my vets about getting my dog a passport so we can take him on holiday with us,he is chipped and has just had his rabies vaccine,as i was paying the receptionist was telling me that before we can return home we have to find a vet over there and have him fleed and wormed 24-48hours before we leave,is this whateveryone has to do while on holiday?there may not be a vets for miles!!and will probably charge a fortune,and if we dont get it done in that time just before we return he cant be let out of the country!sounds a bit complicated to me!

Yes thats correct, a friend of ours took his dog to France and had to find a vet before he came home.

I also heard of someone else who were unable to bring their pet back because they couldnt find the microchip. it had to go into quarantine, although I dont think this is a regular occurence, but thought would make you aware.

You need to do some research before you go so that you know exactly where the vet is located. I would also get a script prepared by someone fluent in the language (unless you are, of course) so that the vet will be clear about your requirements.
If you don't get this done in the correct time scale your dog WILL be quarantined.

hmm,thanks for all yuor answers,i really didnt realise that so much was involved,i couldn't imagine if my dog ever had to go into quarantine if something went wrong,he may be better at home,we have friends who come and stay here and look after him,he loves it but then sulks with us for weeks after we get back!!haha!

Hi, I bring dogs backwards and forwards to the continent all the time, it isn't that complicated. The dog should by now have a pet passport, when you go abroad, you need a vet to worm and give the dog a tick treatment (not fleas) at least 24 hours before departure and you must get back into the UK before the 48 hours is up. Seeing if you can find the chip is always a heart stopping moment and some UK chips can't be read abroad, they will in some circumstances accept a tattoo.
I have always found it easier to get back in via Rotterdam rather than Calais.
If you know where you are going, contact a breed club in that area and they should be able to recommend a good vet in the area.
