my employers have just aquired a 7.5 t lorry
although i have a licence to drive one,i havent
actually driven one before...can i ask for training

Damn right you can!

I would refuse to drive it until I was trained.

You also need to know about tachograph and drivers hours rules.
Not only would it be in your interests but also your employers', so, yes, common sense should prevail. Demand it!

because im 47 the right to drive a 7.5t vehicle
is automatic...it isnt now of course,so i have
grandad rights i believe they changed the rules
in 1997...having said that ive never driven one

I thought you were supposed to have a special' ticket' to drive on of those.
My mate that works for the council has one.
Ask your employers about it.
