I've always been rubbish at maths so was hoping someone could help me. If someone says to you that an area is 4 cubic metres does that mean it's 4m x 4m x 4m? So width, length and height are all individually 4 metres

Thanks

No. It means that the length times the width times the height (all in metres) equals 4. It's not an area - that would be square metres - cubic metres refers to volume.

So it could be 2m X 2m X 1m - as an example.

Yours would be 4 metres cubed rather than 4 cubic metres.
that would be a cube wich measures 4mtres by 4 metres and would be 4 metres high.
The someone in the question is refering to an area where it should be refering to volume.

hope that is clear...

Zac...Rollo is correct.

Now, how could 2m x2m x 1m = 64 cubic metres....it can't

There is a difference between cubic metres and metres cubed.

I thought metres cubic & cubic meters were were the number...say 3, to the power of 3.
eg. 3x3x3=27
whoops that was gobbledegook.
Meters cubed & cubic meters are the same...aren't they?
your thinking of cubed

squared and cubed numbers are numbers to an indice of 2 and 3. ofcourse your can get numbers to the power of any other number. even minus and decimal numbers.
Sorry Zac...got mixed up with poster and questioner. LOL
