thinking of cruising to america from southampton could anybody tell me which is the best side to book a cabin c/w balcony so as to get good views when sailing into ports (new york / boston /quebec

No, because you don't know which side the ship will tie up. However, on a westbound cruise, port side will be sunny and starboard shaded (in general). If you want more info on you ship and cruise go to http://www.cruisecritic.com/
You can never tell as the boat may reverse into dock so best to just be on the top decks to avoid disappointment
The only site you need is http://boards.cruisecritic.com/index.php. This will tell you everything you need to know. There are 3 cruise terminals in NY so it depends on the line as to where you dock.
Off topic but did you know the word posh comes from Port Out Starboard Home? from the early days of cruising. :-)
