no way are you too old!! get yourself down to the old college of knowledge and enquire about it, good luck xx
It does depend on the level you want to get to with your chef skills. Training can learn you the skills but learning on the job so to speak will give you more experience faster. As you are unemployed you could probably train at college for a cheaper rate than. My advice would be to train and work in a kitchen at the same time. If not chefs, many places are crying out for pot washers; which is still relevant experience. With kitchen work with qualifications you could enter as a sous chef and work your way up to head chef if you prove yourself (will take a few years). Cooking at home is very different to cooking in a kitchen at work; the hours are very long compare to other job some chefs work 12 hours + a day. It is also hot and stressful and you will have to work fast and under pressure and be prepared to have cuts on your hand. If your good at giving orders as well as recieving them I say go for it. I hope my advice helps and no you're not too old.
tatu ---go for it , you are definitely not too old.Colleges have lots of older students, and will go out of their way to help you.

Sincere good luck.
you are not too old but I wouldn't waste time with a training course, get out there and find a job. even if it's a cook in a small cafe or coffee shop. Experience counts, rather than qualifications. My daughter is a chef so I know a fair bit about the system. She has qualifications but has learned that they are only interested in ability and passion. Some of her colleagues have no training, most are polish, and everyone just works their way up. It is very long hours and very stressful, but if that's what you want to do-go for it!
