Rent in one end of town? (4)

I have T _ RN, and assume the answer is TORN - but why (apart from 'n' being the end of 'town')?

I suspect I'm missing the bleeding obvious here!

It's possible what the setter had in mind was that the w (west) in town was to be replaced with the r in rent giving you torn as another meaning for rent.
turn?

to move around town centre.

I wondered if 'end of town' is to be considered cryptically as either 'T or N'. I'm sorry Azed wasn't brave(?) enough to set 35A as the clue word!
I think it is TORN, but am likewise unsure. I think one end of town could be "TON", a common ending for town names. Thus Torn could be R in TON, with "rent" as the definition.
I think I just got it. T or N is one end of town!
Doh!

Thanks for all your thoughts. I'm as persuaded by that last explanation as I am by anything. Not a great clue, which can be the case with Azed when it comes to shorter lights.

'Torn' looks like the only word that satisfies the possible definitions anyway.
