Anti Chew Spray

Hi all,

Recently my hubby and I have had a 1 year old rescue dog and last week he went on a chewing frenzy. We think it is still because he is young and puppy like which often have chewing tendencies.

Has anyone ever tried the anti chew sprays to protect furniture - especially Shaws Anti Chew Spray (from Pets at Home)?

Is it really effective? Did it work for you?

Hi, antichew sprays don't work, mostly because you can't spray everything. If you need to leave the dog alone, get a large dog crate and put his bed in there. You will know then that why you are out, he is safe and so is your house. It isn't cruel, as my dogs often choose to go in during the day for a snooze. It also helps to put him in there when you have visitors or children etc as they can get a bit of peace.
Give him plenty of things that he can chew, not a lot of bones as they can splinter and can give the runs, also watch hide chews as they can choke a dog, give nylabone chews or similar, they are great.

Some anti chew sprays do work on some dogs. Mine hate the smell, and found that I could spray the things they had a liking for. I didnt find the Shaws one much good though, try this one, also useful if they have an injury you want to stop them licking or pulling off bandages.

I am not keen on leaving a dog in a crate and if I have to leave a dog that chews, I make sure they have been exercised, and give them some of the treat balls to keep them occupied.

I tried that one Jules when I was house sitting a dog who'd just had a crusiate ligament op, the problem was she loved the taste of it , she used to lick it off and bark for more :-}

yes our first dog (the only one who has been a recidivist chewer) used to love the taste as well.
Really and truly they need supervision and control when they are around things they would chew so that they learn. We crated our pups when they were little so I could get on with housework and go to the loo/shower in peace but as soon as they were housetrained and more or less reliable we stopped it as they never really took to the cage as a den and it took up a huge amount of the living room. If we leave them at home we still only allow access to the living room and hall.
A chewing spree when left alone can be a sign of stress which needs addressing at root cause, especially if your boy is a rescue. In the mean time I would suggest a comfortable crate, massive exercise before being left alone and a nylabone or stuffed kong.

i had a spray for my dog i think it was a sour apple flavour it stank horrible.i used it on a wooden step the dog took great pleasure in chewing.i sprayed it on and he spent the next ten mins licking the step.it didnt work for us but all dogs are different

Thank you all for your responses.

We went out yesterday and got him a nylabone and a kong toy with liver kong biscuits to put in and he loves it. Spent ages trying to figure it out and it has done the trick. He has been good all day.

He has plenty of walks, play and exercise so we think the chewing is just because of him still being a puppy really. He seems happy and is kipping in his bed at the moment. So cute!
