whats the best way to do this without having to worry about bursting pipes and the like?

use a pipe/wire detector to check first if there is a metal or current carrying wire underneath. u should be able to get one at and iron monger/hardware store a plumbers or electricians shop.

common sense ! if there is any sockets/switches radiators or sanitary ware directly above below or adjacent then tread with cation! if not hammer away !!!

Hi plop1389...I'm no DIY guru and I guess it would completely depend on the size and the weight of the object you would like to put on the wall, but, I did see an advert on the television for something called "No Nails Wood Glue"(or similar name)...I'm not sure who it was by but the white toothed person was beaming as he was gluing his shelf to the wall.  You could take a look in a DIY store but I would definately check out how heavy the object is as it may not be strong enough. 
Your thinking of "NO MORE NAILS" get it at any DIY store
