Are we still permitted a 10 day period of grace on the expiry of the current Road Tax.? My insurers (Saga) don't put insurance details on the Big Brother computer for about 3 days into the new tax period - so I can't get a tax disc without queuing at the Post Office.

"Those days" never existed. It's an old wife's tale!
If you renew online near the end of the month there is now an exemption -

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Motoringt ransactions/BeforeyouapplyD/DG_10034732

'If you prefer to tax in the last few days of the month, there is now an exemption from the offence of not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month and allows time for the new disc to arrive in the post.'

There is no such thing as a "grace period" however, it usually takes up to a fortnight for the authorities to act so as long as you sort it asap you'll be fine.
My tax on the car runs out at the end of March and I received the reminder on the first week of March so I get plenty of time to get the cash ready....
