Keyspan for Mac - restarting

This is quite a specific question, and I will be impressed if it is answered...

I have a keyspan adaptor (usb to serial) on Mac 9.2.2
When the USB adaptor is plugged in, my mac always restarts instead of staying shut down. I tried removing the driver and it makes no difference. The difference between in shutting down ok and restarting itself is only seen if I leave the usb plugged in, or remove it.

Any ideas?

What have you attached at the serial end, printer or a scanner?
Have you tried an email to Trip-Lite in the US. They now own Keyspan http://www.tripplite.com/en/lp/keyspan/
