Not sure if you are aware but you say Adobe paintshop as if that were one product.

It is in fact Adobe Photoshop

and Painshop Pro.

Adobe Photoshop is very expensive (in the hundreds of pounds) but Photoshop Elements (a cut down version) is only about 60 and may do the job.
You can download a free trial version of Photoshop Elements (Windows) here:

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelwin/
Or you could try DrawPlus from Serif, which is free from here:

http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/

Serif make the previous versions of their products available free in the hope you may buy some of their newer products.

For DrawPlus it says

"DrawPlus 4 has all the power and tools you need to create attention-grabbing logos, striking text and artistic masterpieces"
If you are trying to design a logo, Photoshop is the wrong tool. You need Adobe Illustrator, but that too is expensive.

Photoshop and Illustrator combined is even better and is sold under the Adobe Color Suite 3 package.
The best and best-value tool for logo design, illustration, etc., is IMHO Xara Xtreme.

>Adobe Color Suite 3 package

I thought CS3 stood for Creative Suite 3.

Photoshop and Illustrator are packaged together in a number of Adobe CS3 "suites" such as the "Design" suite.

But as you say, they are very expensive.

neil: that's wrong, you can do some amazing stuff with things like The Gimp (free software). Photoshop just happens to be the industry standard.

want2findout: if you're doing designs more suited to vector graphics, use Adobe Illustrator ideally, or something similar like Inkscape (free software). This is far better than a raster file type such as Photoshop, The Gimp, etc.
Why not try one of the logo design companies. Visit http://companylogos.ws/ to get an idea for what the major logo design companies are charging online. You can also use one of the DIY logo sites like logoyes.com
