Doesn't the song have Anti-English undertones? If that's the case why do a whole stadium full of fans sing it who apparently also support an English football club? Yeah, there's a significant population in Merseyside with Irish roots, but it's also the case in other English cities like London, at the end of the day they're suppose to be supporting a English football club with an English Captain.

The Kop actually sing 'The fields of Anfield road' to the tune of '....Athenry' :-

Outside the Shankly Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Shankly they have taken you away
But you left a great eleven
Before you went to heaven
Now it's glory round the Fields of Anfield Road.

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
We had Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Outside the Paisley Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Paisley they have taken you away
You led the great 11
Back in Rome in 77
And the Redmen they are still playing the same way
All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
We had Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road
The song is a celebration of surviving against all the odds. The song is brilliant and rousing; that's why Liverpool and Celtic fans sing it.

Suggest you listen to the version by Dropkick Murphys in Boston, US - who also perform the main anthem 'Tessie' for the Boston Red Sox team.

Yeah I'm a fan of the Dropkick Murphys, the first time I heard this song was through their cover, then when I watched a Liverpool homegame on TV I recognised the melody they where singing, it's a good song, but now I know the Kop don't sing the actual original version.
I used to have it as my ringtone till i heard the scousers sing it

I changed back to the nokia tune
