Thanks to you both I have now completed the puzzle but there is one word which I cannot connect with the clue. Maybe you will have some ideas
Clue : Wood, bound with wire, apt to be made ready (8)
- a - h - b - e. I can only find two words to fit these letters, cashable and washable. Only the second appears in Chambers but I cannot see that it has anything to do with the clue.
Aany suggestions?

w is wire, ash is wood, , able is apt. I think!
cashable (made ready/made into cash)...ash bound by cable/wire

Thank you again. i had seen the 'ash' but not the cable. Must get my eyes tested!!
