Why is it when a woman gets a new top, & tries it on at home (having already tried it on in the shop), decides that she doesn't like it any more.

I never saw it. I was sat in the bored men corner In M&S.
Because it looks differen at home than in the shop. It's true. The same things happen with shoes, they look fab in the shop and crappy at home, and they don't match with anything like you thought they would
I used to do this alot but now if I try it on in changing room, if I am umming and arrghing then I wont buy it otherwise I know it will sit in my cupboard for years

I like watching the other men who are equally as bored as I am. Saw one bloke with his missus & 2 teenage daughters, he looked as bored as bored man can be who comes from the Borders & is director of the board.

Nathalie has a point. Shops use very clever lighting and different mirrors to influence how you see yourself in shop changing rooms. So it is more than possible to try something on in a shop and it look great, only to find that in the "real" light at home, without a flattering mirror, it looks vile!

There are certain shops that get it totally wrong too... and have horrible light and mirrors, so anything you try on looks terrible, so you have to try it on at home to see that you LIKE it!!!

Its true!

kira. Why not look at the clothes outside of the changing room in natural light...its not rocket science you know:-)
Womens' clothes have a magical element in that they change between leaving the shop and getting home. It must be true as so many people I know can verify and I'm sure there are many on here who've experienced this
I have a friend who buys loads of stuff, then takes it all back saying, "look how much money I've saved!"
