My son has a PS3, and we have one fairly old Philips computer connected to Virgin broadband. Bearing in mind I have no idea about anything(!), what do I have to buy to get his PS3 online. A router has been mentioned, but are there different kinds? And do we need anything else? Please keep answers simple. Thank you.

The type of router you buy will depend on how you get your internet service. If it is cable broadband, from Virgin, you need a cable router, anything else is ADSL. Examples here:

You may be able to get a free router from your internet service provider
