Did this in record time (for me), always assuming I haven't screwed up in 10ac: In this way, periodically after Ga and Ge ... (2,7) It must surely be AS FOLLOWS, but after 30-odd hours I think my inability to see why must be terminal. I have never been so frustrated by a Times clue! It must be obvious to anyone who has not got into such a mental block, so will someone please enlighten me?

D'oh! I knew it must be sth to do w the periodic table. I suppose the obvious thing was to google "periodic table", but my excuse is already on record: I was blocked on it. If I had dared, I could even have asked my son, who was a chemist before he was a mathematician. It takes daring, as he called me 'postcocious' for going on chatlines like this. A few years ago I thought he had invented the term, and cannot find any earlier citations. OED NBG. Can anyone help with that?

This was my first qn, and what biddable answerers! Thx a m.
