My Renault 19(74500mls. oil was changed at 63000mls) has developed a fault with its auto gearbox. Occasionally a warning light on the dash comes on and the gearbox changes down one gear and it stays in that gear, even when I come to a stop. When I turn off the engine and re-start the fault is cleared. It then runs ok for a while only to happen again. The car drives fine any other time. Any suggestions.

Was it the engine or the gearbox oil that was changed?    Sounds to me as if the gearbox is low on oil......look for a separate dipstick.   It probably will be that simple....auto boxes are usually ultra reliable though expensive to fix when a fault does occur.   Good luck.

Sorry for not being clear. It was the gearbox oil that was changed at 63k mls. As for the diptick, there isn't one or a level sight plug. Tha gearbox has to be plugged into a computer to have the oil changed. There is no evidence of any oil leaks but I see where you are comimg from.

your car is going into "limphome mode" which means theres a fault you need to take it to a garage with suitable diagnostic eqipment.if you want to check you gear box level its a bit fiddly but possible..

under the gear box theres 2 bungs in sump pan one with a square hole and one with a triangle hole only touch the square hole.

1 start engine and run in park have engine running during the level check

2 with a container underneth remove the bung with square hole ( the hole in sump has a tube inside so dont panic)drain until oil slows down like a fast drip and refit bung

3 turn off engine

4 then add 1/2 ltr through dipstick tube

5 if no oil comes out fill until it does come out
