I have recently hung fat balls and bird seed from a small tree near my back door, and the blue and yellow tits are regular feeders, but there is another bird, which is just as regular, but stays on the ground, and feeds off what the smaller birds drop. It is bigger than a robin, but smaller than a black bird, and is quite dark in colour - dark brown/black. It seems quite tame - it stays there when I go to put rubbish in the bin. Anyone have any idea what type of bird it is?

Starling?
Hi Mrs Poppins the bird you have described sounds like a
starling hope this might help you
Question Author
It's lighter in colour than a starling and doesn't appear to have any speckles on its chest, also its a bit fatter than one (or maybe thats all the food it's getting!)
Probably a female blackbird
sounds like a dunnock. they're quite common and are ground feeders, but are often overlooked because they're so non-descript. if you google the rspb website they have a good section on identifying birds including photographs.
we started feeding the birds last june and since then have counted no less than 25 varieties of birds in the garden - 25!!! we just live in an ordinary suburban area, surrounded by similar houses and it has amazed us. i put out fat balls, peanuts, sunflower seeds and some kitchen food waste (rspb site tells you what attracts the different birds). we also now have 3 birdbaths for them to bath in and drink from. we are now totally addicted to watching the antics of the birds and found it well worth doing a bit of reading up to find out how to attract them into the garden.
