I am thinking of buying a 2000 306 1.8 16v petrol estate. Is this engine reliable (its done 82,000)? What should I look for what goes wrong with them? Are they o.k?

Hi, check around the top of the block to see if it has had a new H/ Gasket, if yes I myself would walk away depending who has done the job, Cam Belt, has that been changed? Service history this is not a big problem as you can soon sort that out, check the floor front & rear make sure hey are dry, Do a HP Check, Has the car got history? Contact last owner for Info, If you have no knowlege with cars & their working TAKE SOMEONE WITH YOU THAT DOES, The car is as good as the person that looks after it.

Many thanks for the info. So they have a generic head gasket problem. I think I'll leave this one well alone and wait prehaps for a diesel.

Hi Rowland, what I am saying that like any car Pugs do not like going short of water, We have had 5, from a 405, 106, 206, 306 & 307, I check and service the cars myself the water I check very very often, I find the cars reliable run well but it all depends on how you run & service them, should you go for one check if the head has been removed, this will be indicated by a clean head to block surface, + many other features, Good Luck.
