Files on memory stick coming up with symbol names

Hi there,
I put by memory stick into the computer this morning and clicked on removable disk e from my computer as always. However.. this time when it opened it has loads of files all with symbols, not the names I gave them. I also cannot open any of them. Please help! I just did a huge amount of work on it! Any ideas?

Usually when you save files onto a memory stick it makes a hidden virtual copy.
The file name is typically has a bunch of symbols in it usually starting with a $ sign.
If you have hidden files visible these files will show up too so check to see if the original copys are still there.

Thanks for your answer but I already did something rather stupid! I was messing around with it and found something that said find and fix errors... it sounded good so I clicked on it. Hey presto - no files at all now! I know they are there though because the available memory left on the stick hasn't changed.
